Cobra Starship's new small venue tour, Hot Mess Across the US, is promising to be one of their most energy-filled and exciting ones yet. With an all-star line-up featuring The Friday Night Boys, The Audition and DJ Skeet Skeet they sure know how to get a party started.
Before the actual start of the show Gabe Saporta, Alex Suarez and Victoria Asher came out and met with the fans, taking pictures and signing autographs. I thought that was very cool of them to come out and get to know their fans before the show and also the fact they didn't leave until the show was actually going to start. The crowds started making their way in around 6 PM and we quickly made our way to the floor before we lost spots. Eventually we scooted up near the front from the amount of jumping and dancing happening.
DJ Skeet Skeet was the first up and he played many remixes that he had made for us, ones involving Katy Perry and 3OH!3. The crowd's energy really got started and then it was time for the Friday Night Boys to come out. They had such stage presence and really kept the crowd excited. They played some of their better known songs such as "Molly Makeout", "Suicide Sunday", "Stuttering", "High School" and "That's What She Said". Andrew Goldstein also made a point to keep throwing his guitar picks into the masses of hot, sweaty teens causing riots in the middle of the floor.
After The Friday Night Boys came the boys of The Audition. Singer Danny Stevens came out and immediately got to work on starting a relationship with the audience. Some of the things said were kind of crude, but hey, if they weren't said we wouldn't know the real Stevens. Who wants to know some fake? Jokes about blow jobs and rears were made and I couldn't help but laugh. I hadn't really heard the band before but they definitely caught my attention. Stevens' voice was strong and kept persevering the whole show. Some of the songs they played we "Los Angeles" (Stevens' favorite), "The Way You Move", "Warm Me Up" and "Don't Be So Hard".
Stevens ended their set by running straight through the center of the crowd over to their merch table in the back of the venue. Everyone then sat in anticipation for the act that was to follow, the headlining act. Cobra Starship. The crowd's energy died a little during the time it took them to set up but right when Ryland Blackinton walked out on stage everyone went wild. Saporta and the rest of the crew soon followed and started the evening off with "Pete Wentz Is The Only Reason We're Famous" without an introduction. One thing I must say about Saporta is he just looks like he feels so comfortable on the stage, like it's his home. They sang other songs such as "Kiss My Sass", "Guilty Pleasure", "The World Has It's Shine, But I'd Drop It On A Dime", "Smile For The Paparazzi", "Damn You Look Good and I'm Drunk", "Snake's On A Plane (Bring It)" and even one from their upcoming CD Hot Mess "Nice Guys Finish Last". Being one of the first ones in the United States to hear that song gave me a cool feeling.
After the show everyone dispersed and I took the initiative to meet Stevens, Seth Johnson (The Audition's guitarist), DJ Skeet Skeet, and Goldstein. Good conversation ensued and then after we made our way outside, down the street, to meet Cobra Starship again. The first one out was Suarez and stayed until he was sure people were done asking him for autographs and were done talking to him. Then Saporta came out, his voice shot from a fun night, and talked with us. I actually taught him how to 'stanky leg' :) Then out came Blackinton who instantly commented on my Iron Man t-shirt and we got talking.
I must say that this had to be one of the best night's of my life by far. If you guys were wondering why I put Cobra Starship as my Artist of the Month; this is the reason.
